Olathe is a growing city located in northeastern Kansas. It is situated in and serves as the county seat of Johnson County. According to the United States Census Bureau, Olathe was home to approximately 135,473 people in 2016. The city is situated in the Kansas City Metropolitan Statistical Area and is located about 20 miles southwest of Downtown Kansas City, Missouri.
Olathe is located in an area originally inhabited by Kansas, Pawnee, and Osage Native American tribes. After the Louisiana Purchase in 1803, European frontiers people moved into the area. 50 years later counties were formed following the Kansas-Nebraska Act. In 1857, Dr. John T. Barton, a land speculator, chose the geographic center for one of the many newly formed counties and named it Olathe. That same year Olathe was incorporated.
